The Aim
You may be asking yourselves, ‘How do I win? What do I have to do?’ That is, actually, quite simple. The aim of the game is to get the best 5-card hand. To do this the players can use their hole cards along with the five community cards on the table.
The Dealer
The first step you have to take before starting the game is to indicate who will be the “dealer” for the round. A disc or some other kind of marker is used to point out the current dealer of the game. The position of the dealer shifts one seat clockwise after each game. The game starts to the left of the dealer and also goes clockwise. Note that the position of the dealer can give you quite a considerable advantage over the others, as the dealer is always the last to bet. He, thus, has a lot more information about his opponents’ cards than they do about his.
The Blinds
There is no ante in Texas Hold’em, two forced bets are used instead. These are called blinds, for people post the bets without seeing their cards. Before any of the players gets his cards, the person to the left of the dealer places the bet, which is generally as big as half of the minimum bet in the game. This is called the small blind. Next to that, the player to the left of the small blind posts a bet, which equals the minimum bet of the game. This is called the big blind.
The Pre-flop
Once that is done, each player is dealt two cards face-down and the first round of betting comes. There are three options you can choose from during the betting process. These are to “to raise”(to increase the bet), “to call” (to make a bet equal to the previous one) or “to fold” (to put down your cards and get out of the game).
The Flop
So, the first betting is over and the dealer turns over the first three community cards, called the flop, and places them face up in the center of the table. Now each player has a 5-card hand, which consists of 2 private cards and 3 community cards. The second round of betting begins and again you can choose to raise, to call or to fold.
The Turn
After all the players have bet on the Flop, a fourth community card is dealt (which is called the turn) and the next betting round starts in a clockwise manner to the dealer’s left.
The River
Logically enough, the river is the 5th and the last community card in the game. After it is placed face up on the board, the final betting round starts.
The Showdown
And now for the most breathtaking part of the game – time for the Showdown has come. The remaining players show their cards. This again in a clockwise manner starting from the dealer’s left. The player with the best 5-card hand wins the pot.
